LONELINESS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF STAYING CONNECTED
October 2026
As people grow older, their world can sometimes become smaller. Retirement may mean losing the daily companionship of coworkers. Friends and family may move away, and sadly, some are lost along the way. Driving may become more difficult, health or mobility can change, and suddenly there are fewer reasons to leave the house. Before long, days that were once busy and filled with people can become much quieter.
There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. Many people enjoy time by themselves, and solitude can be peaceful and renewing. Loneliness is different. It is the feeling that something — or someone — is missing. A person can even feel lonely while surrounded by other people.
Staying connected to others is an important part of healthy aging. A conversation over coffee, a weekly card game, an exercise class, volunteering, attending church, joining a discussion group, or simply sharing a laugh with someone can give purpose and structure to the day. Human beings need to know that someone notices when they walk through the door — and notices when they don’t.
Sometimes the hardest part is taking that first step. After spending a great deal of time alone, walking into a room full of people can feel uncomfortable. It may seem that everyone already knows everyone else. But friendships have to begin somewhere, and very often they begin with something as simple as, “May I sit here?”
This is one of the reasons places like South Salem Seniors, Inc. are so important. Yes, there are activities, classes, games and events, but something even more valuable happens here. Friendships are formed. People share stories, celebrate birthdays, help one another through difficult times and discover that there are still new people to meet and new things to experience.
Connection also works both ways. While it is important to reach out when feeling lonely, it is equally important to notice others. Is there someone who hasn’t been seen lately? A neighbor who lives alone? A friend who stopped coming to an activity? Sometimes a telephone call, an invitation to lunch or a simple “I’ve been thinking about you” can mean far more than anyone realizes.
Growing older inevitably brings changes, but it does not have to mean becoming disconnected from the world. There are friendships still to be made, conversations still to be enjoyed, laughter still to be shared and people who would be very glad to see a new face.
Perhaps one of the best things people can do for themselves — and for one another — is simply to stay connected.
Sometimes, the smallest connection can make the biggest difference.
