September 2017 President’s Article
Presidentially Speaking… by Donna Avina
I proudly accept the role as your new president, and as your new newsletter editor. This is going to be an exciting year and one where we hope to encourage members to become more active in our 28 year-old South Salem Seniors Inc.
We were founded by people just like you and me. We met in someone’s living room in the beginning, to give South Salem seniors a place close to home that provides all types of services. We’re still run by people just like you, for individuals 50 and over, and we’re looking forward to doing so for many years to come.
Your new officers and board have many new ideas for adding new classes and activities, but we have many fun continuing activities. If we are not offering anything that sparks your interest, call one of the officers or board members (see page 2 of this newsletter for contact information), and LET US KNOW! This is YOUR Center, and we want to make it a place where you enjoy coming to relax, visit with friends, learn, and re-purpose your life.
As you already know, we don’t get money to run your Center from tax dollars or grants. We have many fundraising activities, all run by volunteers. Those fundraisers keep your volunteer leaders and fellow members VERY busy! Your hands, ideas, and knowledge can help us keep your Center running. Consider helping out and volunteering. Even if it is only 2 hours twice a year as a cashier at our two bi-annual rummage and book sales. Or maybe you have 3 hours monthly you could help with the monthly fundraiser, the Pancake Breakfast. If you have more time there are many other volunteer opportunities to use your talents, whether these are handyman skills, clerical, helping with newspaper recycling, aiding the crew to pick up donations and deliver sale furniture.
If you have concerns, ideas, or just want to talk, I will have office hours three days a week and your new Vice President Jean Peterson will be here at least two days a week.
I’m looking forward to meeting ALL the members this year, so please drop by and introduce yourselves!
President, Donna Avina
